ALGHERO

In the Northwest area of Sardinia ( 7 mts a.s.l.,  pop. 40594 ), the “little Barcelona” went through its first development in the XII century thanks to the Doria family. It was then conquered in 1348 by King Peter the Ceremonious and his Catalan-Aragon expedition. The Iberian newcomers  re populated Alghero, strengthened its walls and built watchtowers higher of the existing ones.
In 1501  Alghero  became a real city, re opened its gates to the foreigners and enjoyed a development within its walls. In 1720 it passed to the Savoias but its Catalan customs have never been dropped. Following the further expansion of the city, the walls were knocked down and today they are standing only on the side facing the sea. In 1943 an ally-bombing raid damaged the historical centre, which despite this still remains remarkable for its Mediterranean-Catalan characteristics.  The art of coral working has been important for centuries.
